Orfelinda Cavazos Obituary

In Loving Memory of Orfelinda O. Cavazos

Orfelinda was a radiant presence in the lives of those who knew her, and her memory will forever be cherished. Orfelinda leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering strength.

Professionally, Orfelinda was dedicated to her craft in retail sales.Decades ahead of her time, she was an original “Fashionista”, dedicating 60 years of her career working with three generations of the renowned Wells Family, (including Farris and Blanch, Dennis and Jimmy and Chuck and Dennis). She first started working at the Five and Dime Store that would later be known as the landmark Wells of Weslaco. From her start as a store clerk, to the most glamorous sales lady you would ever meet and ultimately the buyer of accessories for the store. Orfelinda approached her work with passion and commitment, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues and the community she served. There is no doubt that her closest friends were the ladies that she worked with at Wells. She had customers that would come from all over the Rio Grande Valley and many that would travel internationally to shop with her because she was their trusted personal shopper. Her taste was impeccable, and she had a way of making every woman who walked through the doors of the store feel beautiful in the clothes and accessories that they were buying. She possessed a rare and precious gift- the ability to make everyone feel special. Many sought her fashion advice even long after her retirement from the sales floor.

Beyond her personal achievements, Orfelinda was an active member of her community. From a very young age, she loved her church community of St. Joan of Arc Church where she was the President of the Alter Society in the 1950s and was active in organizing festivals, raffles, and other fundraising activities for the church. She was also involved with San Martin de Porres Catholic Church and Knapp Hospital helping with fundraising activities throughout the years. As a talented artist she donated many of her paintings to raffles and auctions to raise money for events such as the annual “Harvest Nights”.

Everyone knew Orfelinda was gifted in her ability to be creative, and she graciously volunteered her artistic and creative talents throughout the community - whether it be late nights getting the floats ready for the parades or helping with costuming for theater productions put on by Weslaco ISD, Orfelinda was always willing to give of her time and energy to various charitable organizations. Her acts of kindness touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on the hearts of those she helped.
